Unless I'm mistaken I believe TDKR has the IMAX screens booked to like October.

It looks like The Avengers does indeed have a great shot at winning its third week over Battleship, if the estimates turn out to be true.

#Dictator opens #2 WED w/ about $4.1M, #Avengers still #1 w/ about $6.3M & shd break $400M today in record 14 days.

Tracking for BS must have sank (pun intended)

From Boxoffice.com

Marvel's The Avengers
$56,500,000
Battleship
$47,000,000
The Dictator
$18,500,000
BoxOffice.com's estimates are usually about +/- 7% off.

Meaning Avengers can go anywhere from $52.5 million to $60.5 million.

:woot:

Went on opening weekend...6 people including me and le gf.

Went yesterday with my dad..us plus about 30.

The UK has gone Avengers mad! Dat word of mouth that comes from a genuinely great film.

Went to my 2nd showing last night with the GF. Was going to meet my bro and sis there since we had booked tickets and they had unlimited passes, but the last showing was already sold out by the time we got there.

Yeah, people over here are real into the Avengers, yo. :D

UK probably hasn't seen a frenzy like that since Mamma Mia!

As we saw with Dark Shadows, having IMAX screens booked and keeping them booked are two different things. The theater chains will dump one film in favor of another that can draw an audience better. At the very least, they can split the showtimes to accommodate a preferred film. WB has already been in that position with DS and would likely be forced into another compromise if the IMAX exhibitors asked for one.

Incredible. A group of 30+ people went after 3 weeks.
That's some serious WOM. :woot:

Should Marvel/Disney think of the late June/early July slot for the sequel to really maximize attendance and keep the competition low, or should just stick with the "first out of the gate" route with the early May slot?

It all depends, as you've seen the poor competition this month has really let TA breath as the mass audience prefers to see that. However, if it were to stake its claim early in any of the upcoming years like 2015 where the schedule is basically blank it would scare away a good chunk of rival studios.

TA made $6,339,757 on Wednesday! It maintains its place at #13 on the All time Domestic Box Office with $395,813,047. Tomorrow should see The Avengers pass 400 million dometically! :D

I highly doubt that this scenario is going to happen with TDKR. By the time that movie comes out, The Avengers would have burned off most of it's demand by then. Only movie I can see that might be competition for TDKR in IMAX would be TASM.

We're talking about Disney possibly re-releasing Avengers in IMAX in the fall. It happened with Star Trek, and it certainly might happen with Avengers.

Really hope Avengers gets another landmark third weekend and smashes Battleship which looks horrible.

And now that embargo is over. Battleship, I mean it's really just a Michael Bay-lite flick. It's not terrible. Some of the action scenes are fun and the big third act moment is just so ridiculous and silly it kind of works in a dumb fun popcorn movie sense. But the aliens are freaking idiotic. Story and dialogue are just bad.

I want to like Kitsch but the kid gives me nothing. All it seems he can really do is sullen, stoic stone face.

If they were going to re-release the avengers in imax early winter would be a much better time for profits. It's pretty much a dead zone for competition.

I could see that happening. I'm sure they're going to try to do everything to get to 600M if possible, if it's close.

I think barring unforseen circumstances Avengers will be no 1 for 3 weeks. BOM just released their predictions for the weekend, and this probably represents the most conservative estimate I've seen, because I think Avengers can manager 45% or better

Forecast (May 18-20):
1. The Avengers - $53.2 million (-48%)
2. Battleship - $38.7 million
3. What to Expect - $21.9 million
4. The Dictator - $17.5 million ($24.5 million five-day)
5. Dark Shadows - $14.6 million (-51%)

The Avengers is now the highest-grossing Disney release of all time!

comparing both Avatar and Avengers box office, Avatar made more money on Thursday than Avenger :(

i doubt Avengers will beat Avatar, that sucks

You shouldn't set your hopes that high, Avengers is far ahead of Avatar at this point(domestically) but the legs of Avatar defied all conventions even though it had very little competition. Sinking Titanic's original domestic run is a lot more doable.
