Star Wars is No.2

Here's the Top Ten...

1 Gone with the Wind
2 Star Wars
3 The Sound of Music
4 E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial
5 Titanic
6 The Ten Commandments
7 Jaws
8 Doctor Zhivago
9 The Exorcist
10 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

:yay:
Number 10 is ironic considering this weekends Box Office Champ.

What do yall think this movie's gonna end up making total? I don't know much about box office trends or how long they'd keep a movie in theaters, but what's a likely total figure the Avengers will make in the long run?

It's nice to finally see the adjusted list; it looks much more like I would imagine a list of the 10 most popular movies of all time to look like (as opposed to, say, Harry Potter 7.5 and Transformers 3).

Every single week when I read BoxOfficeMojo they're touting all the different records that were broken. Sometimes it looks desperate - "highest debut ever for an R-rated comedy in March!" It comes down to their trade audience, which always wants to hear good news from box office reports. But not taking inflation into consideration makes it a bit of a cheat.

Boxofficemojo would be pretty damn boring if they go by the inflation adjusted box office figures alone. Economics have changed since Gone With The Wind. I doubt a movie, no matter how popular, can even hope to crack top 10, let alone challege GWTW record.

Yep, there would be no box office records broken since 1939! :D

Current estimate for SWATH at Deadline.com is 56.1 Million.

Congrats to The Avengers for surpassing TDK domestically and Potter 8 in global box office! Ironically, both movies are from WB. Personally, after seeing how TA's OW were so crowded that it broke down AMC's credit card system, I just can't see how a modern day movie can ever hope to duplicate the ticket sales from decades ago. They're also from vastly different eras, so we should just focus on what is huge today and not so obsessed about the records from the past, because as it stands now those records will never be broken.

I don't see Avengers getting #1 or #2 domestic or internationally. It's done what it set out to do, which is be the biggest superhero movie ever so now the sooner it is on Blu ray the better.

No, The Avengers should stay in theaters as long as it's making money. Disney isn't going to pull it for a while yet. The discs will come out on September 25th regardless of whether it closes in June or late August. I still think Marvel ought to try for an IMAX re-release in August to see if they can't up the totals and give people one last burst of fun before the Fall grind commences.

Whenever there is an opportunity, like a new Avengers film coming out or an anniversary, Disney should re-issue The Avengers the same way other studios put their films back in theaters. Each time it's bound to earn millions more, so the total take will rise. Eventually TA could equal or topple Cameron's films. And who knows how much money The Avengers 2 will rake in.

Avengers 2 now has the chance to beat Cameron.

I hope for an IMAX re-release. Because I missed out on that.

I think it still has a 50/50 shot at #2 DOM. Disney would love that and so would I.

3rd of all time is awesome I'd love it to get to number 2 but of not its no biggie.

I agree. If Disney has an opportunity, they should re-release The Avengers back to the theatre, especially if it's IMAX 3-D so moviegoers can really enjoy it on the biggest screen. Cameron did it with his movies like Titanic, and I don't see why Disney shouldn't do the same. I think Avatar's records may be too hard to break, but Titanic is not, and I think TA has a shot at the #2 domestic take. However, I won't be surprised if Cameron decides to re-re-release Titanic just to put some distance between it and TA, though.

A re-release down the road isn't impossible.

Titanic was rereleased in 3D a few months ago, I doubt they are going rerelease it twice in one year .

Wow...congrats to the Avengers for breaking yet another record

It probably won't overtake Titanic's record...but i'm willing to bet that the sequel will definitely do exactly that

This weekend Avengers almost got the #2 spot, leaving MIB on #3. Almost 9 million. Pretty good.

Sucks to be MIB3. Should be noted that the movies that have under performed this year (Dark Shadows/Battleship/John Carter/MIB3) have had terrible uninspiring trailers. I'm sorry but that can't be a coincedence.

The weird thing is, I never even knew that Battleship, John Carter and MIB3 were even coming out until about 1-2 weeks before release. And even then, I never really saw that many trailers or TV spots for it.

Glad to see that my original prediction of 1.2 billion was low! Cant wait for what comes next!

It's not going to hit #2 worldwide or domestic, or #3 Foreign, but it does have a chance of breaking $1.5 B WW, which is unreal.

Given that most of us have seen TA multiple times, and might even see it again this summer, I think we can wait a few months for the Blu-Ray. If they had waited til the holidays ,wouldve been fine with that.

There are only 2 scenarios where TA2 has a chance to surpass TA and challenge the records:

1. The Avengers II: Written and Directed by Joss Whedon
2. The Avengers II: Written by Joss Whedon Directed by Brad Bird Executive Producer Joss Whedon

The biggest potential hurdle will be if one or more of the other sequels - Thor 2, Cap2, IM3 - isnt successful. TA2 would still be a huge success, but maybe not a record breaker.

From top to bottom, terrible marketing. I really hope Sony step up their game and start pushing ASM right now and we start seeing TV spots right now.
TDKR almost doesn't need any marketing as people are going to watch it regardless.
Congratuations to Disney for their genius marketing, from their super bowl spot to their TV spots highlighting each character individually. Must of cost them a fortune but has paid dividens.
