The media coverage, or how they're covering it, is a big problem.
When outlets are calling it like the Batman Movie Massacre, that's pretty bad.

Basically every media outlet that isn't owned by Time Warner (the company that owns WB) is going to do what they can to tie the event into the Batman character and the film.
They are, after all, the competition.
Explains the writing of articles such as the one above, and ABC News referring to the event as "The Batman Massacre."
Welcome to the 21st Century. Don't blame it on the guns; blame it on Batman.
This is a PR disaster. Don't ever believe that all publicity is good publicity. Soccer moms may well prevent their kids from going anywhere near this movie. The tragedy in itself was bad enough, but the murdering idiot's comments couldn't have been better judged to do as much harm to the movie as possible.
Not that box office returns are really what matters here- people have lost their lives and others will probably never feel safe to go near a cinema again. What a horrible business.
WORD.

"Violence like the massacre that happened in Aurora, Colo., today is a staple of action films, including Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy. A similar, now haunting, scene unfurls in "The Dark Knight Rises" when a masked villain leads a violent gang into a packed football stadium and deploys guns and explosives on the unsuspecting crowd.
While there has been no indication as to the motives of James Holmes, the suspected 24-year-old shooter who is now in custody, new evidence suggests that he was inspired by the Batman series of comic books and/or movies.
Law enforcement sources confirmed to ABC News that Holmes said "I am the Joker" when apprehended by authorities. His hair was painted red, the same hair color of Heath Ledger's Joker at one point in 2008's "The Dark Knight."

Actually CNN and TMZ have been two of the worst offenders. Both are owned by Time Warner. Surprisingly, Fox News doesn't even mention Batman on their home page while CNN does. MSNBC lists Batman in their headline too.
The joker's hair is Green not red.
Good for them. That's what we call the "Blitz spirit", over here.I live in the suburbs, and every IMAX showing of TDKR is sold out for the day. The place was mobbed - even with families. They're interviewing people in NYC right now on the news, and everyone is saying that this isn't affecting their decision to see the movie.
It will be OK.

To be honest, I'm ****ing annoyed. I don't count myself among the overhyped fanboys in the expectation for this movie, but it just seems really cruel and really sad that some little **** head is able to ruin what would basically have been a global Batman party.
I can't see the movie this weekend anyway, but if I have time I might just buy a couple of tickets and give them to the homeless.
Speaking on behalf of the cast and crew of The Dark Knight Rises, I would like to express our profound sorrow at the senseless tragedy that has befallen the entire Aurora community. I would not presume to know anything about the victims of the shooting but that they were there last night to watch a movie. I believe movies are one of the great American art forms and the shared experience of watching a story unfold on screen is an important and joyful pastime. The movie theatre is my home, and the idea that someone would violate that innocent and hopeful place in such an unbearably savage way is devastating to me. Nothing any of us can say could ever adequately express our feelings for the innocent victims of this appalling crime, but our thoughts are with them and their families.
I just wanna say that I'm really proud of how most Hype members are handling this situation.
For all of the hardcore fanboying we do and the vicious way we often go at each other's throats over the smallest things, nearly every post I've read today has been of support and condolence. When I woke up this morning and read the news, I was expecting to come on the Hype and see people complaining about how this would kill the movie's box office and how it would never have a chance to beat Avengers, blah blah blah.
That is not the case at all. Discussion has been respectful and sincere and that's a truly beautiful thing to witness. I'll be honest with you, when I found out about the incident, one of my first thoughts was that this would probably affect the box office. Just like how when I found out about Heath's passing one of my first thoughts was "I hope he got to finish the film". It's almost shameful to admit, but I know I am not the only one who had these thoughts run through their head. The important thing is that we realize that while these things are factors, they are not at all what is important at the moment.
While so much of the rest of the internet is jumping to wild conclusions, irrational finger pointing and scapegoating, it is us "crazy fanboys" who have remained humble and reverent. And for that, I want to say thank you to all of you for making me proud to be part of such a community.
I don't know here to post this but Chris Nolan's official statement made me cry. I think it was important for him to say something.

Very classy statement there. What he said about films and theaters is right on how i feel.

Two great statementsI don't know here to post this but Chris Nolan's official statement made me cry. I think it was important for him to say something.

Me too. Movies are my favorite form of entertainment, coming from an avid gamer.
Ok man, but please be aware that there are some like me who don't want to hear informed speculation about anything to do with the ending of this trilogy so close to seeing the film. It's the only potential spoiler I've ever actively tried to avoid and part of that is avoiding every other Batman thread here for the last few years, even though I really wanted to participate. I've had films ruined by false speculation in the past also as you are gearing yourself up for a particular event that you didn't want to know about and the fact it doesn't actually happen comes too late to let you watch/enjoy the film as you normally would. That's doesnt make it the ending. In the end all characters interact with each other, people disliked that part in particular.
