since you have a HDR display, Iceman, have you tested just running an X1 game on your tv with HDR mode on and then with HDR off for comparison?

can you tell a difference yourself, as that articles suggests?

With mine I did not do any testing (turning it off and back on). I think it does look better though, colors look "deeper". I could be imagining things though.

I also have the Xbox S doing the up scaling instead of my TV. One might do it better than the other bug again I did not go into testing with this as I was just happy to figure out I did not even have 4K enabled on my HDMI ports on the TV lol.

I only am playing Overwatch at this point and it looks great, crisp, colorful.. as it should. I Do believe it looks better on the Xbox S.

that's very interesting. thanks!

so you can choose whether your S or your TV does the upscaling?

that's true. For me, a $100 variation is acceptable. But $200 or more is pushing it, imo.

plus it's not only the cost of the console but also the cost of a 4K tv.

in my case, I'd have to buy both when I get the Neo or Scorpio, so I have to factor in the cost of a 4K tv, too.
It probably would be for most people too I think. I just look at it a bit differently lol.

Ah yes if you have to buy a 4k TV at the same time that definitely changes it all.

yeah. I understand where you're coming from.

when you think about it, spending $400 or $500 on a console that can provide entertainment value for many years is a much better value than spending that same amount of money on some kind of one-off "event."

No as I only recently read articles that suggested HDR might end up being a thing for gaming, and I also had assumed they were talking about the Scorpio. Will do this.

Nice. I find it strange that not all TVs default to the best possible setting (ie 4k, hdr, upscaled, max frame rates) or at least make it obvious under which setting you are currently watching and that it could be improved by doing X. I know my way around TVs more than most and I could imagine many people unknowingly paying a big premium for many costly features that are never used because they are using the wrong HDMI port or they haven't enabled said HDMI port. It seems to be unnecessarily complicated on some TVs.

I'd be interested to hear what you find, Iceman.

Everyone values things differently so there's no right answer. For me the value of a lost evening of entertainment if for eg there was a power cut is probably something like $40 so the cost of any of these hardware items that last years is never a factor for me. However when playing hundreds of games the premium for buying new is not worth it to me given how fast the prices depreciate, and given the wealth of alternatives available.

that's true. everyone is different.

I just know that for me, I get a lot of value out of my game consoles, as gaming is my primary form of entertainment ( and these consoles act as media players, too. ).

Exactly. With the ports on my TV there is an "enhanced" setting which I never knew of. This of course enables 4K and HDR on the Port.

I do not understand why there is even a setting, why not have the HDMI port already accept 4K. I had to dig through the manual and find a small reference that this enables 4K.

And... on the back of my receiver I happened to notice that only a few of the HDMI ports had HDCP 2.2 written under them, and the "Game" HDMI port was not one of them so I had to switch to a different one.

At least the Xbox One S has that 4K/HDR checklist screen that lets you know if it is not working. That was very helpful.

So strange! And just silly that the 'Game' port isn't fully optimised for gaming, at least more so than any other port. At least it sounds like there is some common sense with the settings on the S.

Here's something I wanted to post yesterday night in the Xboxone thread but just didn't get around to it

Here it is I'll make it short since it's about consoles not being around according to micro soft.

EP Daily Rundown for August 18, 2016

Today in the Rundown, we examine the future of the console industry in light of some recent comments by Microsoft, find out what new TV series Marvel has in the works, have a look at a retro Batman animated movie and the upcoming live action Justice League, get an update on what Ubisoft has planned for virtual reality, have the first details on the next expansion for Cities: Skylines, and finally, take a look at the new MacGyver TV series!

Traditional video game consoles might be coming to an end. With the new Xbox One S rolling out in stores and the higher-powered Project Scorpio coming next year,

Microsoft is on the verge of doing away with traditional console generation cycles. That’s according to Microsoft’s head of Xbox games marketing Aaron Greenberg, who tells Engadget that, for Microsoft, “the future is without console generations.” He says that they see Project Scorpio as a way of upgrading the Xbox One hardware without it being a new generation, which allows them to build on their existing game library and community without starting fresh with a completely new system. Xbox head Phil Spencer has made similar statements in the past, saying that he’d like to get rid of the seven-year gap between consoles and instead introduce regular hardware updates, similar to what the mobile phone market is doing. This will be a big change in the console industry, although it’s unclear how console gamers themselves will feel about it; they’ll get more up-to-date games, but only if they continuously update their hardware. PC gamers have already been doing this for decades, so we’ll have to wait and see if it catches on in the console world. Project Scorpio will arrive late next year.

I love that it no longer has the big heavy power brick. I keep my One on top of one of my 4 foot tall speakers and the distance between the brick on the floor and where it plugged into the system was pushing it.

I know speakers (magnets) are shielded and such.. but still that itch in the back of my head could never allow me to put my Xbox onto a speaker lol.

Then there is the vibration from the speakers themselves..

EP Daily Rundown for August 23, 2016

It's time to slip into another cozy edition of The Rundown. Today, we take a look at Microsoft's new Xbox Onesie, have some bad news for frugal PlayStation fans, find out how the survival horror game Allison Road is rising from the dead, getearly details on the first DLC for Dark Souls III, and finally, have an update on the latest features coming to Pokémon Go!

If you think you look too cool and sophisticated when you’re playing games, Microsoft has a solution. Xbox Australia has unveiled the Xbox Onesie. No, it’s not a joke. It’s a onesie that Microsoft says is custom designed to enhance your entertainment experience, complete with big pockets that can fit your game controller or TV remote, an arm pouch for your mobile phone, an extra large hood that can fit gaming headphones,

forearm grips to prevent slipping while you’re playing, and rollable arms and legs to accommodate warm weather. The ridiculous-looking outfit comes in two colors, white and black, and you can also embroider it with your gamertag, so you know it’s yours if someone tries to steal it.

This really isn’t a joke. Microsoft says the Xbox Onesie will go on sale in Australia soon, and hopefully it will come to North America and other territories as well. What other silly fashion accessories could Microsoft make? A Windows 10 Snuggie? DOS flip-flops? The BASIC Bra? Give us your ideas in the comments below within the EPn.tv youtube channel .

It’s getting more expensive to play with your friends on the PS4. Sony is raising the price of the PlayStation Plus subscription service, which, as all PS4 owners know, is required to play games online. In the US, the yearly price is increasing by $10, going up from $50 a year to $60, although in Canada, it’s going up by $20, and will now cost $70 a year. The three-month subscriptions are also going up in Canada, and the new prices take effect on September 22. This is the first price increase since PlayStation Plus began in 2010, and Sony says that the new pricing reflects current market conditions, which is probably a reference to inflation. If you don’t want to pay extra, you’ll need to cancel automatic renewal of your subscription before the new prices take effect, although there probably won’t be too many people doing that since you need PlayStation Plus to play online. This comes as Sony is on the verge of introducing not one, but two new versions of the PS4: the smaller PS4 Slim, and the PlayStation Neo, which will be much more powerful. There’s also rumoured to be a new, redesigned version of the DualShock 4 controller, with a new light bar across the top. All the new hardware is expected to be officially unveiled at a special event on September 7.
It looks like a popular horror game is coming back from the dead. The first-person survival horror title Allison Road is back in development. The freaky-looking project was cancelled earlier this year, but now, in a statement to IGN, the game’s creator Christian Kesler has announced that it’s back in development with a new development label he formed with his wife. They haven’t revealed exactly why development was initially shut down, but there are rumours of troubles between the team and their original publisher. Allison Road has a complicated past. It’s inspired by the playable teaser for Konami’s Silent Hills, which was cancelled last year after Konami’s falling out with game maker Hideo Kojima. The makers of Allison Road figured that if Konami didn’t want to use the idea, they would. This made the game very popular with everyone who was disappointed by the cancellation of Silent Hills, so they’re sure to be delighted that it’s back in development. We’ll let you know when more terrifying details come in.

That isn’t the only new game that looks like it’s inspired by Silent Hills. Konami’s rival Capcom is working on Resident Evil 7, which looks suspiciously similar to the playable teaser for Silent Hills. They say it was already in the works before that game was announced, but we can’t help but be a little skeptical given how similar they look. Resident Evil 7 arrives in January.
Prepare to die, again, with Dark Souls 3. Bandai Namco is expected to officially unveiled the first batch of DLC for the game tomorrow, but it looks like the first details have already leaked. According to a Japanese website called Hachima, the first DLC for Dark Souls 3 will focus primarily on player-vs-player combat, adding a new PvP-exclusive map along with new weapons and magic abilities. In the main game, PvP happens when one player invades the game of another, which some people think is very annoying and frustrating, so expect those people to steer clear of this DLC. It lands October 26, and there’s also a second batch of DLC on the way, which is rumoured to be focusing on single-player. We’ll have more details just as soon as Bandai Namco officially announces them.

Pokémon Go is about to get a little more straightforward. Niantic Labs has begun rolling out a new update for the hit mobile game on iOS and Android devices. It’s not too big, mostly consisting of small bug fixes, but there is one noticeable new feature: the team leader characters now actually have something to do. Blanche, Candela, and Spark, the heads of Team Mystic, Valor, and Instinct, will now appear in the game to give you appraisals of your captured Pokémon, letting you know about their unique abilities and a power-ups. This is sure to come in handy for those of you training your Pokémon for battle in the gyms. It’s also a smart move for Niantic to start providing a little more information about how to actually play the game, given that the lack of a thorough in-game tutorial is one of the biggest complaints so far. Niantic is also working on bigger updates, including one that will finally let you battle with other players outside of the gyms. Hopefully that arrives soon.

Interesting but umm..Maybe winter. I don't even know what to think

:funny:

"Bro, lets put on our onesies and play some gamebox!"

Forza Horizon 1 is the first of the two GWG 360 games for next month, Mirrors Edge the second one.

the XB1 choices were forgettable IMHO.

So I just discovered "Achievement Art" and that I can use it for the background. I love this feature! The Rise of the Tomb Raider achievement art is great.

How do you do that? I bet there are loads of great possibilities from my favourite games.

well I got my One S and apparently only the 2TB model is the only 'core model' the 500 and 1TB ones are bundles only. I went to get my 1TB model and they came from the back room with a Madden 17 bundle. I am not a fan of Madden or most sports games, so I took the game out and traded it in and they knocked 30 bucks off of the console. and before you all say "why did you not just sell it for more money?", I just did not care, the game was free so if I would have bought it I would have re sold it to recoup the cost, this game was free so it was 30 bucks pure profit towards my One S.

Thanks!

Congrats! How is it so far?

I did not get the chance to hook it up I got it before work and dropped it off on the way. I got home last night and was tired and did not get the chance to even take it out of the box. I will have it hooked up later today ;).

did you by chance get your bundle at Gamestop?

cuz I heard Gamestop actually includes the physical game with the bundle.

everywhere else, the bundled game is digital.
