I knew 200 mil. opening weekend would happen one day...but its kinda amazing to see it happen at all. Like...it was only 20 years ago when maybe a 50 mill. opening day seemed like blockbuster status.

This. I knew it would do well..but the biggest EVER..? I doubt even Marvel predicted that.

I know come Monday they're all going to be sipping champagne and dancing on their desktops over at Paramount/Marvel.

Disney made a deal with the theatre chains it seems, maybe a slightly bigger cut of the Avengers ticket money for an extra screen for John Carter?

I read on another forum that The Avengers and Carter are a double feature at some drive-in theaters. That may account for the $1M+ weekend take. Maybe I should check the drive-in near here and see what's playing.

You also have to think long term in the idea that an opening weekend like this automatically gives an added boost to Iron Man 3, Cap 2, and Thor 2, in the sense that everyone seeing this movie more than likely will see those more so then before Avengers came out.

I will also be seeing TDKR opening day, Nolan's done wonders with Bats and this is coming from a guy who's into more comic booky superhero films.

I'll sure be seeing TDKR opening weekend. I may have loathed TDK but I really liked BB and am interested in how it all concludes. After that though, Batman's gotta get back to a more comic booky style of film that allows more of the fantastic to be used.

I placed my bet on the 800 million > marker many moons ago, and I was one of the ones who doubted that Avengers would break the $1 billion box office club.

I've never been happier to be wrong in my life.

Congrats, Marvel, and congrats, Disney. *Great* to see the partnership paying off this quickly....and that's gotta mean great things for more Marvel films getting the greenlight; for more marquee talent to join Marvel Studios; for Marvel to get bigger budgets and bigger gambles than Disney might have granted just a few months ago.

History in the making.

And I'm not gonna jump on the whole Avengers vs. TDKR bandwagon --- Avengers' success is great news for TDKR as well. It's great news for the whole CBM genre, which is what we're here for, right, folks? I just sincerely hope it lights a fire under Warners' asses and makes them quit fretting about the failure of Green Lantern. If DC would set up a cinematic universe like the MCU, they could see this kind of success as well, and they damn well know it.

Warner needs to get a guy like Avi Arad or Kevin Fiege in charge of all DC character movie projects...someone in charge of courting writers, directors, and actors...(say what you want about Arad, but he really got the ball rolling)...

I just wish he would open up to a shared Universe for ALL the DC characters.

Arad DID get the ball rolling and for that he does deserve some credit. The problem was that he ended up being more concerned with making sure that ball was rolling than he was with making sure it was also rolling in the right direction. Feige is the guy who ended up making sure things started rolling in the right direction.

I do think it should light a fire under WB that has been sitting on at least a half dozen potential franchises that it hasn't acted upon from the DC Universe for decades.

However, Whedon made a good point in an interview recently that the DC Universe is a tougher nut to crack cinematically. Batman is an exception, because he is so visually cinematic with the billowing cape in darkness and can be grounded in a gritty, criminal setting. However, even he, like the rest of DC, is almost a "god" among men (even moreso than Marvel's Thor), because the characters are larger than life. Marvel makes their heroes "normal" or people with problems, while the DC heroes are supposed to be above everyone else. That's one of the many problems the GL film faced in that the character is larger than life and supposed to be an elite cut above all humanity. Nolan found the secret of grounding that into realistic reactions from a city about such a strange "legend." But that's harder to do with, say, Wonder Woman or The Flash.

It's doable, but it's going to take more creativity and intelligence than the paint-by-numbers approach they did in GL. And as much as I love Nolan's Batman, you can't use him to create this world on screen, in my opinion.

I don't know if I agree with that about DC characters. I think it's more that WB never got how to translate their characters and not putting forth the talent who know the balance of what can and can not work on the big screen when coming from the comic world. DC films seem to reek of a paint by numbers and to much interference from execs on what has to be in the movie. GL just didn't work because it was a mediocre movie to a lot of people. I'm in the minority. I didn't see it as awful as many claimed. It had a lion share of issues for me but it was entertaining to me. No worse then TF2 and 3 from Bay.
