Didn't Iron Man get a September or October DVD/Blu-ray release?

I think Disney realizes they can get that landmark $600 million here. And I think that means they will give theaters a bigger cut to keep it on screens longer. Studios do this sometimes so they can reach a certain milestone and get those bragging rights.

Thor was also released onto DVD/Blu-ray in late September and it came out in Theaters around the same time as TA did.

But TA is quite a different beast than either Iron Man or Thor. One of the earliest releases I've seen for any big summer movie was First Class in just 3 months.

I also believe that studios give a damn about these milestones. Since TA is Disney's biggest movie ever, you can be sure that they'll help it reach that $600 mil.

Disney cares about every record The Avengers has set, so much so that on Monday they put out a long press release listing each and every record in order. The studio has struck gold and will keep mining it until every last bit has been unearthed. They will re-release TA if that's what it takes to push the film over the $600 million domestic mark.

Who knows, by late summer they might be shooting for a higher mark internationally as well. I wasn't aware until recently that TDK was re-released by WB to get to one billion. Disney/Marvel has no worries on that front, obviously, but they might take steps to try for $1.5B or $2B, if that seems doable.

The movie definitely makes over $500 million this weekend. Yeah it's going to slow down a lot with MIB3, Spider-Man, et al but I think it's still going to draw some decent money in those later weeks.

Avengers probably stands to make another $300 M dollars on blu-ray and DVD (considering TDK's DVD sales in 2008.) I think it'd be stupid to hurt those sales just to get bragging rights for something like $600 M domestic.

Those sales will be there no matter when the DVD comes out.

DVD sales aren't what they used to be.

They'll be lucky to make 200 m from dvd.

But they'll make alot more from tv rights and toys.

The Avengers became the highest grossing movie in latin america history, surpassing both Titanic and Avatar.

Well done Latin America!

You have proven your great taste in movies.

Good to know you love superheroes.

In just its first four days of release, Captain America: The First Avenger made $57 million in Blu-Ray/DVD sales. CA:TFA was admittedly a freakish breakout hit on disk, but is there any doubt that The Avengers will blow those numbers away?

Yeah, people might put off the purchase a little if it's still at cinemas but they aren't going to decide to not buy it at all if they were going to.

Avengers is going to kill it on blu-ray! I bet it has a much higher attach rate than most other films.

Avengers will easily be the top selling blu-ray of the year.

They will leave it in theaters well through August, and probably with a re-release somewhere in there. I think it will cross 600M, it will just take a while. MIB so far has a fresh rating, but look at the reviews, an average of 5.7/10. That's not a good movie. I think Avengers will have a very low drop this weekend, because there literally is nothing else to see.

MIB3 brands itself as a sci-fi comedy, but I think it would be rather ironic if people actually get bigger laughs from TA than MIB3. And I think for the long Memorial Day weekend, every movie will get some boost, and while TA will drop I think in terms of percentage it will be below 50%. As long it keeps it up I have no doubt that $600 mil is within reach in a month or so.

This weekend shouldbe very interesting MIB is comp, but how heavy is it????

Can't believe people think TA has a shot at beating MIB3 this weekend. I'm hoping for about 30 mil this weekend which would be hella good in it's fourth week.

Even if the wom on MIB3 is toxic I think it would still have enough life to beat Avengers.

Come on, MIB will be no1 this weekend.
Who expects anything else after 4 weeks?

TA would've beaten MIB3 if it came out in the following week like DS did, but according to estimates MIB3 will have a bigger gross than TA's third week, so there's no way TA can win the crown again with a month under its belt. However, I think TA will have better legs than MIB3, and in the long run TA will hover around the top spots while the Will Smith movie will likely suffer bigger drops.

As much as I love Avengers I would not bet against Will Smith, especially on a holiday weekend.

Im actually going to buy a blu ray player just for this movie. And maybe a new tv. Is that sad? (Ill watch other stuff too. I guess)

on-topic: anyone have Monday estimates?

Estimates are $5.4 million. Actuals should be up in the next hours or so...

I think that is because a lot of people skipped it at the cinema
