You must mean worldwide for those international totals.

You must mean worldwide for those international totals.

Yep, my bad. Im pretty sure TA isnt getting anywhere near those totals just on international alone....Its no AVATAR, lol...

Based on the TDK range and the numbers above, TA should have pulled down around$3550000 Thursday- that would bring its total around 475million and move into #4 all time. then: Fri-$9240000 Sat-$15120000 Sun-$10530000 for a Weekend Total of $34900000 which would put it around 510 million total, only 23 from TDK in just 24 days. Over weeks 5-10 TDK pulled in 80 million dollars, assuming the 114% number holds true that could be as much as 91 million over that time for TA. Around week 11 or 12 the numbers should drop to around 1 million a week for some time. TDK spent months in theaters, Im not sure how long they will run TA but it should safely cross the 600 million line regardless

Guys, A billion is no longer cool. You know what it is cool.

A bajillion trillion dollars. :word:

Reuters ran an interesting article about the current reign of The Avengers at the box office and the way that blockbusters like it can suffocate other blockbuster wannabes. The writers point out that the two big blockbusters so far this year, The Avengers and The Hunger Games, virtually shut out the competing films, which were unable to gain any traction. That is in contrast to last year and previous cycles, where several movies were able to thrive and do good business at the same time (e.g. Harry Potter 7.2 and Captain America, or Avatar and Sherlock Holmes).

The Universal rep seems a bit delusional, though, thinking that Battleship would have done better if The Avengers hadn't vacuumed up all the money last weekend.

Cannibalism at the box office: the "Avengers" effect

"The Avengers" is a bona fide box office phenomenon - but is it crowding out every other movie at the cineplex?

In the past, the superheroes' moneymaking powers would have been good news for other summertime movies, like "Dark Shadows," "The Dictator" and "Battleship," the argument being that a rising tide lifts all boats.

Instead those movies have struggled to stay afloat, with "Battleship" opening to a dismal $25 million.

Starting with "The Hunger Games" and now "The Avengers" - two massive franchise pictures have dominated the box office and made it impossible for other movies to secure huge openings.

"'Avengers' created an undeniable excitement worldwide and dwarfed other films that attempted to create an event," Kevin Goetz, founder and CEO of market research company ScreenEngine, told TheWrap.

Studios are finding that in a packed season there is less breathing room than ever before.

"When you have a 'Titanic' or a 'The Avengers,' it becomes difficult to grow the business for the other films opening - there's only so much the marketplace will expand," Universal Pictures domestic distribution chief Nikki Rocco, whose studio distributed "Battleship," told TheWrap.

"In my heart of hearts I feel 'Battleship' would have fared much better if in its third week 'Avengers' wasn't doing $55 million."

cannibalism at the box office: The "avengers" effect
lol!

They call it cannibalism but what they really mean is increased standards for movie goers who now expect better quality after Avengers.

Oh please, Universal. I saw The Avengers instead of Battleship because Battleship looked like crap. And I was never planning to see Battleship anyway.

The Avengers show I saw last night (4th time!) was almost sold out.

I just brought ticket to see TA again this morning. Take that, MIB3!

I would love to see Avengers #1 for a 4th week in a row, but I think MIB3 will take that spot - may be close...

Is MIB III being successful or is Avengers taking the crown again?

When the choice is: a) guaranteed meh like Battleship or b)watching TA for a 2nd or 3rd time, people chose b. That says something for TA, but it really says something about Battleship (et al). I agree that TA, as well as the HP series and the Nolan Batmovies have raised the bar. Throw in MI:GP, which I finally saw last night. Art created by artists. Go figure.

I know its all "product", of course, but that doesnt mean these movies can't be high quality. That requires great writing and artistic vision.

The world needs Whedon and Cuaron and Jonez and Bird and Nolan and de Toro and Duncan Jones. It needs writers, storytellers, artists. The Bay's of the world no longer serve a purpose.

And I'm not including all the incredibly talented writers/directors working in television right now.

More than likely MIB3 will do just enough to take the number one spot. However it's Memorial Day weekend so yet again Avengers will do great business.

Marvel has its Memorial Day pitch for The Avengers out. Nick Fury: "What are you prepared to do?" See. It. Again. Thor: "We're not finished yet." It's like a subliminal message, with a Mjolnir uppercut to hammer it home.

Seriously, the campaign for TA has been brilliant. It should serve as the template for marketing all Marvel films going forward.

Yea, a lot of thought has gone into the way they've edited their tv spots and trailers.

I think I'm gonna go see it again this weekend. :awesome:

Well, I went to see the 9:40 showtime, and the place was more than half full. Not bad on an early weekday. There was laughters at the right places, and it still feels very festive even after 4 weeks. I think they will have a big weekend.

I'm guessing $40ish million (maybe a bit more) for TA and $60+ million for MIB3. Though that's just a three-day guess, not four.

Posted this in another forum, but Sony is desperate to get MIB 3 going strong.

MIB 3 is already getting mixed reviews, hovering around the 65% range so far:

But Sony has already spent north of $215 million (possibly $230 million) so much so that Sony is refusing to even pay for the 3D glasses.

Sony needs the upcoming 4-day weekend gross to at least hit $200 million world wide to guarantee that it doesn't flop.

It seems that it's tracking at least $90 million domestic (4-day opening).

Deadline: "Sony and Cinemas not budging on who pays for 3D Glasses"

I'm actually feeling sorry for all the films following Avengers now..........but I get this little voice in my head yelling WOOHOO TAKE THAT WORLD!!!.....it's deafing at times. :D
