The Avengers The Avengers Box-Office Prediction Thread - Part 7

There will be a lightning bottle captured a second time, especially with a villain as epic as Thanos and a writer/director as competent as Whedon.
You never know man, even Dark Knight Rises didn't surpass Dark Knight. Sequelitis, laws of diminishing returns and all that.

True, but TDK far surpassed Batman Begins' box office haul. The LOTR series earned more with each installment, HP8 outdid all previous films in the series, each Transformers sequel rose in earnings (regardless of their quality), the Shrek and Toy Story sequels surmounted their predecessors, as did Matrix Reloaded (but not Revolutions). Even Spider-Man 3 out-earned Spider-Man. So sequels can and do surpass the originals on may occasions.

I think you're talking about threequel itis.

I'm not sure if A2 can beat A1 in box office, but I think they can make an even greater movie with Thanos.

I look for A2 to surpass A1 in opening Record numbers as well as the Final Box office haul. Due to the Hype, quality of the film as well as increased ticket prices...Its going to be a monster hit....

A2 will undoubtedly surpass A1 opening weekend. By 2015, there will be more ppl on earth, more movie theaters and prices tend to go up. TA has proven itself therefore those who saw TA1 will all see it as well as those who are not born yet. Also Joss Whedon.

Not sure if it will pass Avatar though.

I can't stress how much I loved this movie. I remember when Weadon was picked and a lot of fanboys groaned and talked mess, I knew Weadon would pull it off, but this surprised even me. Weadon rocks, the Avengers rock and although there are still haters out there, to anyone else they sound pretty hallow right now.

TDKR didn't surpass TDK because it was a pretty ho-hum movie, and flat out inferior to TDK. I had fun and all, but I think most people just thought of it as a standard sequel and not anything like the earth shattering epic everyone thought it was going to be.

If you make an event type movie, people will go to it.

I'd say a better comparison would be Empire Strikes Back. The general consensus was that it was a far superior film to Star Wars, but it didn't make as much as the first. Or Spider-man 2 which most consider the best in the series, but didn't make as much.

So yes it will be difficult to out gross the first film, especially if there's any significant competition behind it, as Avengers has pretty weak competition. But step 1 is trying to make a better film than the first.

Egads, Para Norman bumped Avengers out of the Theater lol Good thing I went last week lol

Mike Birbiglia is the man. If anyone deserves to beat the Avengers, it's him. Dunno if any of you are familiar with his stuff, but go out and buy his book and his stand up CDs ASAP. You won't regret it.

We need the latest update on the B.O. I hope it passes 1.5 bil :p

Well, apparently Disney is quietly re-expanding the theater count for The Avengers for this upcoming Friday (probably a modest 1,500-2,400 theaters). I guess they're trying to get a few more people to come and see the film before the DVD/Blu-ray hits September 25th.

Disney and Sony did that last year with quietly re-releasing Cars 2 and Bad Teacher on the same weekend to drum up more awareness.
