Well if Justice League ends up underperforming like BvS or does worse (which I think is on the table if audiences stay away from the next Zack Snyder entry), my guess is that WB will be back at Nolan's door in a heartbeat--assuming of course Ben doesn't want to do his own Batman movie (which might happen if he looks at the receptions for BvS and JL1 and decides he doesn't want this kind of scrutiny going forward).
However, the idea of Nolan or Bale returning also seems like a pipe dream. In which case, Warner is in a tough spot.
Ben will do his own movie. The script is written or almost finished. And like Kevin Smith said, Ben is a self-correcting beast. He's probably looking at reviews and will make sure his own film doesn't fall victim to the **** Zack's film was accused of. Like character development, hammy villains, editing/pacing issues, way too many subplots. Of course, there's a chance that he genuinely loves the film, ignoring all reviews, and will make a lot of the same mistakes. But it's still Affleck. He's a more focused, character driven filmmaker, so it has to be at least
better than Snyder's effort.
If something happens, like Leto's Joker gets bad reviews (doubt it)...then a solo Batman movie may not be as huge as we all think. Even with Ben running it. I do have faith in that solo movie, but anything can happen. I never thought Batman vs Superman would make less than a billion and get 29 percent ratings.
We don't know how good or bad Justice League will be. If that bombs, there can't be a sequel. Even if they get George Miller in there, the title is still "Justice League" with only 2 years of time in between. They won't be able to sell a sequel. So it's all about Batman at that point. I seriously doubt people give a **** about a Superman movie with Cavill anymore..
What does it take for WB to come crawling back to Bale and Nolan? I don't think they'll crawl back to Bale at any point because critics and fans seem to enjoy Affleck in the role too much. But Nolan is a different story. The most he'll do is return as a producer. He'll never direct the character again, so it would have to go down like this. WB loses their cool, fires Snyder, abandons the shared universe, focuses on solo movies until each one of them die out, twiddle their thumbs once Ben says F this i did Batman a few times and now im tired of the training schedule so im out, they ask Nolan to bring his version back but with a new director. Im really not coming to a conclusion here, where Bale comes back. It seems too unlikely and Bale seems tired of transforming his body now that he's in his 40's. Without Joker, there's not much of a single Batman story to tell either. Well, not one that will inspire the old crew to return. What's there to do? Riddler? Penguin? Obscure villains that the general audience has never seen? Of course it can work but with those guys?? The Nolan brothers don't care for Penguin. They don't think he can work (which is b.s by the way). They don't think Clayface or Freeze can work. That i can see, but you can still make it work. Riddler, Strange, Croc, Black Mask, they can all work just fine. The ship has sailed for prequels since Bale is aging quicker than Affleck.
WB is ****ed if this whole thing falls apart after Ben gets tired of it. They'll need 4 or 5 years AT LEAST to regroup. Reboot Batman again. Which is not a problem because there are stories to tell with a younger Bats. But geez. they really need a Justice League movie and Batman movie to do really well.
I think my Spider-Man comment was blown out of proportion. I agree Shauner that the John Hughes tone could work for this new Spider-Man but my main concern is I hope it doesn't become too much of a soap opera. I'll admit that I watched some old youtube videos discussing the greatness of the first two Raimi films and I got a little nostalgic. So that's probably what caused the bluntness of my post, lol. That, and I will be flat out honest - I still haven't warmed up to the idea that we have to sit through Peter Parker in high school.....again. I want to see some grown-man Spider-Man again on film!
Peter can obviously have a diverse group of friends from different ethnic backgrounds. I just hope it's not Disney trying too hard to diversify his friends for the sake of, well, diversity. I remember a buddy of mine who is a big Comic Book/Movie fan telling me there was some petition online for Finn and Poe to be the first gay couple in the Star Wars universe. I'm like, you gotta be kidding me?
Uhh no Batlobster, no drunk posting for me. I was only on Beer number 4 when I made that post yesterday. I can hold my liquor.
Could work? That's
the tone for Spidey if he's really young in this. It will always be able to work.
Webb's movies were more like a soap opera between Gwen and Peter. I don't see John Hughes' films as soap operas, especially his greater ones in the 80's. They were great fun, really funny, there was a bit of drama here and there, great characters and development, a ton of heart and just...fun. Until you get to the darker villains and stories, you don't necessarily need to get super serious.
I see what you mean with the adult spidey. But i don't think we've seen a high school Parker who stays there for years, throughout a bunch of movies. It's always like he's in high school, graduates really quickly, and jumps into adulthood. We haven't sat through Peter in high school at all man. Only the typical origin stuff. I think it's cool that we don't have to sit through the origin again, but we get to see him all throughout high school. Then as the actor grows up, we see him grow into the role over the next decade, into adulthood, where stories get darker and deeper. By Spider-Man 3, it looked like Maguire was 30 years old. Sony always rushes it.
