The Dark Knight Rises You Have My Permission To Lounge - Part 9

So I checked out TDK on iTunes last night. While the brighter scenes definitely suffered in the downconversion to this iTunes stream, the darker and more contrasty shots give you a better approximation of what this is going to look like. You gotta realize that this is still a crappy version and NOT how this is intended to be seen, but if you're a geek for this stuff...it's incredible to finally see the actual 35mm scenes restored. When you can see an improvement even here, you know it's going to be something else with a proper 4k setup.

Here's a little TDKR Lounge exclusive: (right click if you want to enlarge)

I took a screencap to compare:

The new version definitely looks more alive.

Big improvement over those previous ones posted. I really like the ones of Batman, Gordon, and Joker at the mob meeting/burning the pile of money/Prewitt building scene. The one of Joker looking back in the street is a bit too orange tinted for my liking.

Thanks for that comparison shot Greens. I wanted to do that this morning, but didn't have enough time.

It's unreal how our eyes just got used to such a subpar version. We'll have to wait and see the real product to see how exactly the colors will look, but it's still pretty wild to see a sharpness and clarity in the 35mm footage that simply wasn't there for 9 years.

All of this is looking really interesting and yes, I might once again buy the trilogy. Does anyone recommend a particular player to play these on?

Well, you'll need a 4K TV with HDR as well as a 4K Blu-ray player. So it's not a cheap investment. I don't have either yet...hoping to upgrade within the next year, but we'll see. Obviously, the longer you wait the more prices are likely to go down with stuff...but I really want to see the new transfers in all their glory. Ugh.

I checked out some Begins on iTunes last night. I'll see if I can grab a few screenshots. Like TDK, it also has a bit of that magenta exaggeration and the bright scenes seem way too bright. This gives me more confidence that this is a result of HDR to HD/SDR conversion these issues won't be a problem with the actual 4K experience.

Being that the version of Begins our eyes have gotten used to is essentially a 720p version, once again it's pretty crazy to see everything with a bit more sharpness and clarity.

It's gonna be a trip seeing Begins in such high quality. It's gonna be a while for me but man that's going to be amazing. Like watching the film for the first time again.

I actually just purchased a 4K TV with HDR ....but no idea what kind of player to get.

Any 4K player should do the trick unless you own a Xbox One S.

Just get the cheapest one you can get your hands on.

Ok thanks everyone. Damn those transfers look amazing. I didn't think I'd buy the set again unless they came out with more outtakes but looks like here I go again.

Begins looks and feels so different. Reminds me more of Rises.

I can't believe they added a crappy blue tint to the prior transfers of Begins.

I’d prefer it clear, without the tint muddying it.

Again, didn't sit down to watch it all the way through, but just watching chunks of it on my computer was really weird. Like with TDK, it's legitimately triggering memories of my theater viewing experience and it does kind of give me that fresh perspective again.

Ugh, I really need to up my home theater game ASAP.

I'm not so sure they "added" a blue tint as much as it's a result of the HDR just being able to separate the whites in a shot like that significantly better. Note that the new version still has the same blue-ish look, but everything is more separated and natural. The blues are living where they're supposed to on those ice caps and not muddying up the rest of the image. And of course a 720 image being blown up to 1080 also obviously isn't going to do you any favors in terms of losing clarity.

I bought a cheap 4K HDMI chord to connect my 4K player to my TV. Do I need to get an expensive? Would that make any difference?

Assuming you have a 4K TV too, right?

If so, I think you're good to go. It's not going to make a difference in picture quality. I think the major difference would be speed in streaming. And actually most regular HDMI cables can currently handle 4K video from a 4K player from what I understand, so you're already ahead of the game.

I'm super anal about 4K and I absolutely love it. Really can't wait to watch the proper TDKR 4K transfers through my entertainment center, especially TDK itself.
